Bill’s intro to ID

He arrived on Friday, even if his class was on Monday. He said he wanted to get into the mood of the studio. He does observe people a lot, makes one question and one more to get deeper into someone’s thoughts so that at some point you feel a bit embarrassed, realizing you have been being analyzed. He stands with straight parallel legs, a little angled feet. The upper arm aligned with the body and the hands joined with tight fingers, the thumbs crossing each other in correspondence of the navel, as if it was his center of gravity.

Bill is a curious person. Coming into the class he ask everybody how they say good morning in their own language, repeating it to be sure he grabbed the right sound. He makes us feel comfortable playing this game so that the gab between teacher and students shrinks (or maybe elevate) to a friendly conversation with someone you esteem. Clever interaction!

His knowledge is very broad and varied so he makes continuous connections among topics, jumping from one story to another. I imagine his mind to be a very fluid and active bustle of connected wires. I think his flux of thoughts is quite hard to follow sometimes but I found very practical that he make use of the scribing (explaining concepts through sketches realized on the spot, while speaking) to keep the listener concentrated.

Some notes about what we have done:

– guided sketching and storyboards

– design task: design the newspaper of the future

– around the city: collect interactions

– methods card & “a day with your mobile phone”

– improv

– final challenge: the house of the future (or the cartoon house)
